Coverdisk Archive – PC Gamer
Posted on October 18th, 2016
PC Gamer launched in the UK in December 1993 with the US edition following soon after in 1994. It was a solid magazine but I always felt it lacked the humour and personality of magazines like PC Zone. But having said that, it’s the only PC Magazine left on the newsagent shelves (unless you count Micro Mart – I don’t, it’s terrible), so they must have done something right.
The PC shelf space has been taken over a mass of Linux and Raspberry Pi mags and “bookzines” and that’s no bad thing, but I do miss the PC Gaming mags.

Coverdisk Archive – Personal Computer World
Posted on October 14th, 2016
Personal Computer World was the first British PC magazine running from 1978 to 2009.
It wasn’t one of the magazines that really appealed to me, it was more “IT Industry” focused and seemed to be about 50% ads (it was a BIG magazine). However, much like buying breakfast cereal for the free gift, I was persuaded to buy the odd issues for the cover floppy.
You can see more at the British Centre for Computing History.

Coverdisk Archive – PC Review
Posted on October 13th, 2016
I don’t remember too much about PC Review and indeed can’t find anything on it past 1992 (archive.org/details/pcreviewmagazine) which was before I started to read it. From what I remember it disappeared mid decade. I think it failed to find its identity (and audience); in the early to mid 90s the newsagents where awash with PC magazines and the market was reaching saturation.
Although looking at the disk listing for February 1994 (Doom!) the volume is called “WPCG_COV1”; WPCG being shorthand for “What PC Games”. This was a short lived magazine that appeared around the same time. I’m guessing that was a failed attempt at a re-brand or sister magazine with better circulation.

Coverdisk Archive – PC Zone
Posted on October 7th, 2016
PC Zone was one of my favourite magazines full of British humour and a total lack of respect for pushy games companies. When a publisher, after a particular honest and brutal review, refused to give them any more game for review (that’ll learn um!)… they simply bought the games and reviewed them in the next issue.
Then there’s Charlie Brooker. Who can forget “The Lara Croft Cruelty Zoo” (later reprinted as “Doctor Helmut Werstler’s Cruelty Zoo” after it was pulled from the shelves of W.H. Smiths).
It ran from April 1993 until September 2010. Find out more at archive.org, oldgamemags.com/pc-zone/ and magazinesfromthepast.wikia.com/wiki/PC_Zone.
They also annoyingly didn’t label all the cover floppies with a date or issue number. I’ll try work these out from content or other resources as I go. If you can fill in any blanks, let me know.
You can see some of my scans of the first and last issue in PC Zone RIP.

Coverdisk Archive
Posted on October 6th, 2016
I recently rediscovered boxes and boxes of old IBM PC floppy disks from the 90s. Mainly British PC magazine coverdisks (PC Zone, PC Format, PC Review, PC Gamer etc) that I collected religiously week in week out when I was teenager.
With a bit of influence from some of my favourite YouTubers (Lazy Game Reviews, Nostalgia Nerd and Pixelmusement) I thought it would a fun bit of nostalgia to extract the content of these floppies for use with DOSBox or any retro PC setup you have.
Actually we can use the D-Fend Reloaded (DosBox Frontend Reloaded) instead of plain DOSBox. This adds a nice front end and makes using these a whole lot easier. The D-Fend Reloaded installs DOSBox as well.
It’s mainly coverdisk game demos and utilities, but there’s also some old mail order shareware disks and no doubt a lot more besides.
There’s 100s so I’ll keep updating the page as I go, at least once a week. Any questions or suggestions feel free to Contact Me.
Checkout the DOSBox and D-Fend Reloaded Guide if you’re unsure where to start.
The Archives
Many more to follow in the coming days, weeks… years! I’ve 100s to go through.
