Why Should I Use DD-WRT?

If for no other reason, use DD-WRT for stability. You should never have to reboot your router just because it crashes, the WiFi goes down or you loose your net connection. But unfortunately with the firmware a lot manufacturers ship with, you need to do just that. But not with DD-WRT, I've been using it for a year or two now and never had to reboot.

If that's not enough though, take a look at some of these features, you'd have to pay £100s to get a router with half these features. One of my favorites is the PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) support, allowing me to VPN into my router (no need to have my PC on!) from anywhere I have a net connection. Brilliant! Gives me a local IP like I'm on my own networks, allowing me access to any Network Attached Storage I have, or any PCs connected. Also acts as a kind of proxy server, meaning I have my external UK IP address while abroad... Fantastic for using the BBC iPlayer when stuck is some hotel for work.
